What To Expect From Your First Massage

Many people have never had a massage. Maybe you’re one of those people!

If you’ve finally decided to try a massage, there are some things you should know to prepare you for your session.

What to wear:

You should wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.

You should also be prepared to remove all of your clothing. Some therapists request that you remove your underwear as well.

Don’t worry, you’ll be under a sheet and a good therapist knows draping techniques that will keep you covered at all times.

How long will the massage last?

Most therapists work in 30 minute progressions. Your massage can be 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes.

You can book any length you wish, but I recommend discussing your goals with the therapist beforehand. They can give you a better idea how much time will be most effective.

Where will the therapist work?

If you don’t give a therapist any guidance, they will focus on your back.

For a 60 minute massage:

  • 25 minutes is spent just on the back
  • 5-7 minutes on each leg
  • 5 minutes per arm
  • The rest of the time is spent on the face, head, and neck.

Telling a therapist about your pain will give them a better idea of where to focus and how long to work on each body part.

When I go for a massage, I request extra work on my shoulders because that’s where I hold all my tension.

What happens after?

After a massage, your therapist will offer you water…make sure you drink it.

In fact, drink another glass when you get home.

Massages flush toxins from your body. Without enough water, some toxins will stay in your bloodstream and you won’t get the full effect of the massage.

You should also stay warm so your muscles don’t tense after treatment.

And, don’t be surprised if you feel strange for a few days after your treatment. Your body is adjusting to something new.

Many people experience emotional changes like bursts of euphoria or sadness. These are normal emotions. Your body is flushing out emotional toxins as well as physical ones.

Making sure your massage lasts:

There’s no need to see a massage therapist every week.

You can prolong the benefits of a massage for weeks if you take care of yourself.

Working on better posture, stretching, and Epsom salt baths are crucial ways to keep yourself rejuvenated after a massage session.

You should also take a look at this self-massage routine.

A self-massage can rejuvenate you and it only takes 15 minutes.

Take care,

the book in it or something. I think that you could
